Description:
Large with long neck, large head and eyes, body plumage always unbarred, and at rest wing-tips reach tail-tip. Pale head and upper breast, rufous-brown lower breast and belly, more uniform rufous underwing-coverts, more extensive black carpal patches, large pale primary patch on upperwing, and unbarred pale orange uppertail.
Distribution:
Uncommon passage migrant and summer visitor mainly to south-eastern parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Prefers open-country habitats, steppe, semi-desert, rocky or stony country; also open woodland or woods with clearings; from plains to above 3500 m.
Behavior:
Rather sluggish; often waits for long periods on perch or on ground; also forages with soaring flight; hangs on wind, without beating wings, to survey ground. Preys on mainly small mammals, usually rodents; also hunts reptiles, some small birds, amphibians and large insects.
